There are report of infection, inflammation or swelling occuring months or even years later, after dermal filler treatment. The cause of this isn't certain and generally speaking dermal filler treatment is considered low risk. Millions of dermal fillers have been performed worldwide.

Allergic reactions to dermal fillers are uncommon, but they can occur. It's essential to discuss any allergies or sensitivities with your clinician before treatment.

Vascular Complications: One of the most critical aspects of safety considerations is understanding the vascular anatomy of the face, as complications can arise if the filler is inadvertently injected into a blood vessel. The most common risk area is with lip fillers. Common because it is the most injected treatment area. Therefore is associated with the greatest number of reported vascular complications. Other high risk areas inculde the nose and glabella area. Dr. Sam is an expert in dermal fillers and treats your skin with the utmost care and gentleness to reduce these risks. He does not treat the glabella using fillers, but hace wide experience in complex areas including lips, nose and under eyes, especially. 

Microcannula vs. Needle: Choosing the Safest Approach

Needles: Needles are sharp, pointed instruments. They are basically a knife on the end of a tube and will cut everything they touch. The benefit of a needle is that it allows very accurate, pin point deposition of filler subtance. Needle techniques may be performed alone, or in combination with a microcannula technique. Needles generally carry a higher risk of penetrating a blood vessel and therefore causing bruising, or in more serious instances causing a blocked blood vessel. 

Microcannulae: Microcannulae are thin, flexible tubes that are less likely to puncture blood vessels, making them a safer option for certain areas like the lips, cheeks and under-eye region. They are associated with a reduced risk of bruising and other complications. Microcannula technique are also much less uncomfortable than needle techniques. Dr. Sam's patients often report mild to moderate discomfort only, during their treatments.
